To mark World Mental Health Day 2010 the College of Psychiatry of Ireland is hosting a Visual Art Exhibition & Awards Ceremony to acknowledge the therapeutic value of creative artwork in mental health. The exhibition & awards are also part of a national movement, See Change (www.seechange.ie), which aims to encourage everyone to play a part in reducing the stigma of mental health problems in Ireland by being open and positive about their own and other’s mental health.

COPING WITH a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia affects not only the individual involved, but every member of their family. As well as watching their loved one’s mental wellbeing break down before their eyes, the parents, spouse and siblings of a person with schizophrenia have to deal with the stigma that still surrounds serious mental illness.
